Join Jacob Ira’s Pangalay class on September 18 from 11:30am-3:30pm. Class is offered virtually and in-person at Kapwa Gardens.

Jacob Ira was born and raised in the Philippines and begun his martial arts journey at the age of six years old in Olongapo City, Zambales. Having studied multiple martial arts discipline for over 25 years, he considers Eskrima to be the core of his martial art. Being an avid reader and historian, Jacob became a core member of Bayani Art in 2011 and was part of some of the most iconic projects that Bayani Art have ever created. As a steward of the pre-colonial writing system of the Philippines, known as Baybayin- Jacob has also contributed his knowledge and work to his kababayans, most notably Prof. E.J.R. David who wrote Brown Skin White Minds: Filipino -/American Post Colonial Psychology in which he served as Prof. David’s teacher and consultant in incorporating Baybayin in the book. A perennial student, Jacob continues to learn from other teachers and continues to tap in in his own creativity in order to progress the art of his ancestors. He begun the concept of Pagpatuloy which means continuation or continuity to continue the legacy of those who have gone before him.

His most recent venture, is learning the spiritualism and culture of the Tausug. He hopes to serve as the bridge for the Tausug people in the Philippines in order to promote the culture and spiritualism of the Tausug to the world by working closely with his brother and teacher, Suharto S. Asdal.
