Ancestor Altars

ALL COMMUNITY DAYS HAVE BEEN CANCELED DUE TO RAIN. PLEASE JOIN US ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 FOR OUR CELEBRATION~

“Ancestor Altars” will now be open at a new venue, Sentro Filipino. Join us on November 4 where families can gather, share stories of their loved ones and enjoy the day together.

COVID Policy

We are a community committed to the health and welfare of our members. In order to ensure the safety of our community, we have established covid policies below. Wearing masks is not mandatory but are highly encouraged. As Fall/Winter is here and COVID-19 cases rise, we highly encourage guests to wear masks to decrease the spread of Covid-19. Also, event guests and staff must not be sick, must not have been exposed to someone that tested positive for COVID19 or must not have tested positive themselves in the past five days. We ask that all guests stay home if they have been possibly exposed to someone that tested positive for COVID19 or wake up feeling symptomatic.

About Ancestor Altars

Filipinx culture heals by honoring ancestors in a festival called “Undas” (also known as “Araw ng mga Patay” which translates to Day of the Dead in Tagalog) or All Souls Day.

Undas is a holiday honoring the dead widely celebrated in the Philippines. Filipinx families traditionally hold gatherings around the graves of their departed loved ones and lay out flowers and candles. In between prayers, there’s sharing of stories about the deceased, and some families will even bring their magic mic and a small tv for some karaoke/videoke sessions after the prayers. Undas is a public acknowledgment and an opportunity to praise those that came before and those that have transitioned on.

“Ancestor Altars” at Kapwa Gardens, will be a healing space for the San Francisco Filipinx, BIPOC & SOMA community to grieve for the many loved ones and ancestors that have transitioned on. This project brings the opportunity to heal through art and community with the intention to celebrate our ancestors, absorb the lessons and stories we learned from them, and open channels to receive any messages and wisdom with love and respect.

KŪKULU | Lavender Cinema Lounge

Kultivate Labs and KOHO present
Lavender Cinema Lounge:
KŪKULU, Protecting our Sacred Lands and Empowering Our Next Generations

An Evening with Activist Pua Case, Mauna Kea Education
and Awareness and Run4Salmon

Kumu Pua Case and the Flores-Case ‘Ohana have been part of the re-awakening of a movement of native Hawaiians and indigenous land protectors around the globe to connect, and give purpose and pride to their indigenous roots and the sacred places of their people. Kumu Pua Case and members of Mauna Kea Education and Awareness and the Run4Salmon Prayer journey will be present to chant and speak to how protecting Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain from the sea floor  and supporting the protection of other sacred places, has spurred a global activation and collective voice of multiple generations to stand in respect, reverence and indigenous wisdom to protect their lands, waters, and life ways.

The evening of indigenous wisdom will include a traveling art exhibition from Hawai’i Island - Kūkulu, The Pillars of Mauna ā Wākea, and two films; Beyond Recognition, and Standing Above the Clouds.

About Kūkulu

Kūkulu - The Pillars of Mauna ā Wākea is a traveling exhibition featuring: Art, Merchandise, and Messages of the Mauna Kea Movement. Kūkulu serves as a platform to teach, to share and to inspire the community to stand as pillars for this sacred mountain through visual arts, workshops, presentations, events, and gatherings.

Mauna Kea Education and Awareness has committed to a community vision of creating an unique, interactive, traveling art exhibit Kūkulu; to be a pillar to set the tone and the vibration that is encompassed in the Hawaiian values, and the ʻIke Kupuna or ancestral teachings, that will inspire while educate.

About The Films

Beyond Recognition

After decades struggling to protect her ancestors’ burial places, now engulfed by San Francisco’s sprawl, a Native woman from a non-federally recognized Ohlone tribe and her allies occupy a sacred site to prevent its desecration. When this life-altering event fails to stop the development, they vow to follow a new path- to establish the first women-led urban Indigenous land trust. BEYOND RECOGNITION explores the quest to preserve one’s culture and homeland in a society bent on erasing them.

Standing Above The Clouds

When the world's largest telescope is set to be built on their sacred mountain, Mauna Kea, three Native Hawaiian families dedicate their lives to defending it. Through the lens of mothers and daughters, Standing Above the Clouds explores intergenerational healing and the social and emotional labor of retaining ancient ceremonies while putting your body on the line to protect a sacred mountain.

VSCK Eskrima & Legacy FMA | Many Styles

Presented by The Rooted School
& Kapwa Gardens
Funded by MoHCD

Filipino Martial Arts(FMA) is making a comeback at Kapwa Gardens. In 2022 Kapwa Gadens presented a weekly Filipino martial arts class series. From the different styles of Eskrima to Kali, Filipinos have been deeply immersed in various fighting styles for decades. Attendees got to learn to learn the basics of Filipino martial arts in an inclusive and safe space.

In 2023, Many Styles is back with a new monthly format! Each event will start with beginner classes interwoven with demonstrations. Then at the end of day, sparring sessions hosted by the Sabong Federation.

The event will also feature pre-colonial dance performances, kulintang, vendors, and other FMA adjacent cultural activities. Each month will also feature new styles of FMA.

Instructors

Gregory Manalo

Teaching VSCK Eskrima

Gregory trained with Sonny Umpad for almost a decade, from 1997 until his untimely death in 2006. Gregory has also learned a bit of other martial arts, but he always returned to what he considers his native martial base art, eskrima.

Gregory created the Rooted School in 2021 to inspire and cultivate the warrior scholar through the cultural lens. The Rooted School is an excellent opportunity to bring Pilipino culture to a global audience. The pandemic of 2020 necessitated online interaction, activities, and learning. Coupled with the far-spread Filipino diaspora, the time was right to bring forth the various Pilipino culture bearers together in an online community to be more accessible

About Kristian Kabuay

500 Capp Street, Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APICC), and CAAMFest co-presents
Being, Belonging & Beyond
SF Bay Area AAPI Dance Film Festival

When one creative medium (DANCE) is lifted up by another (FILM), nothing short of alchemy emerges. We are invited to become witnesses to these AAPI stories in cinematic motion, where dancers and collaborators reflect upon their cultural heritage in these vivacious two-dimensional pieces. Screenings include dance films by Lenora Lee Dance, Alleluia Panis, Sammay Dizon, and culminates in the world premiere screening of HOME(in)STEAD, a site-specific dance work by 500 Capp Street artists-in-residence Megan Lowe and Johnny Huy Nguyen.

The finale screening will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A with all participating artists and their collaborators, celebrating the lineage of AAPI performing artists in the Bay Area that are documenting dance and movement in film/video as a way to create conversations about the experiences of AAPI communities and the ways they are reflecting upon and honoring their cultural heritages.

There will be music, performances, and food vendors present throughout the day!

This film festival is also part of APICC’s 26th United States of Asian America Festival (USAAF).

Kapwa Gardens x KOHO Present Yum Yams: Ube Meets Matcha

Your Favorite Ube Festival is Back for 2023 with a twist!

Yum Yams celebrates all things Ube. Ube is a Filipino Sweet yam that is taking over the world of desserts. It’s unique flavor and striking deep purple color ignites excitement in the food world. Ube is flexible and can be used as a flavoring ingredient or a food color.

Kapwa Gardens is excited to announce that Yum Yams is back for the fourth time. To celebrate AAPI month, we’re partnering with Japantown's KOHO SF for a special collaboration - Ube Meets Matcha!

KOHO SF is the latest member of the Kultivate Labs family. As a fiscally sponsored organization, KOHO SF hopes to revitalize it's cultural district, Japantown, through arts and culture. This event signals a new wave of colboration between our communities.

A Celebration of All Things Ube & Matcha

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder that has been an integral part of Japanese culinary culture for centuries. Matcha's unique flavor, color, and texture have inspired Japanese chefs to create a wide variety of dishes, including traditional sweets, savory dishes.

Much like Matcha , Ube is a signature component of Filipino culture. Ube is a purple yam that has become a beloved ingredient in Filipino culinary culture. Its vibrant color and sweet flavor make it a popular ingredient in desserts, such as cakes, pastries, and ice cream. Its significance in Filipino cuisine reflects the country's rich agricultural heritage and diverse culinary traditions.

Yum Yams has grown from 1 sell-out event at Kapwa Gardens, to a full on food festival crawl with multiple areas encompassing over 25 vendors.

Tickets for Yum Yams are FREE but we are accepting sliding scale donations. Your donations will help us continue to host our future events and keep our garden growing.

In this upcoming season, we're excited they dedicated an episode to the Bay Area’s Filipino food movement, bringing attention to the rich history, culture, activism, and creativity of our community. As one of the largest Asian communities in the Bay Area, the Filipino community has had a long and deep history in the region, dating back to the late 1800s. From the labor movement, to the farm-to-table movement, to the current movement of evolving the cuisine and food industry work culture, Filipinos have played a pivotal role in shaping the food ecosystem of the Bay Area and beyond.

In this discussion, we'll hear from panelists about their experience being a part of the Filipino food movement in the Bay Area, their experiences and reflections from filming the show, how they’re thinking about food entrepreneurship in today’s economy, and their hopes for the future.
